Springtime in Chattanooga is the ultimate reward for making it through the final weeks of winter…and it’s glorious!

Spring in the Scenic City brings songbirds and show-stopping cherry blossoms. Our rolling hills and mountains are blanketed in tapestries of green. Colorful bursts of wildflowers and Redbuds seem to give a standing ovation to longer daylight hours while soft breezes invite us outdoors before springtime melts into the summer heat. This short season is magical.

Spring trees in Chattanooga

If your ideal spring fling includes eye-popping expanses of nature and ultra-scenic views, Ruby Falls on Lookout Mountain is calling your name!  The park is home to the tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States, along with sweeping views of the Cumberland Plateau, cave adventures, gliding zip lines, award winning special events and luxury treehouse lodging.

The Wild Side of Nature

See the wild side of nature on a Ruby Falls Cave adventure with a guided walk to the thundering waterfall deep inside Lookout Mountain. Spring is prime viewing time of the famous waterfall because seasonal rain showers dramatically amplify its majestic flow. The experience in incomparable!

Group of people in Ruby FallsChoose your Ruby Falls adventure based on your schedule and interests, and purchase timed-entry tickets online in advance. Every cave adventure includes a stop at the beautiful waterfall, named after the beloved wife of its discoverer.

Access the cave by glass-front elevator. The short ride is picturesque as it descends 260-feet into the mountain. The cavern trail to the waterfall is paved and mostly level as you stroll past ancient geological formations, making the 1-mile round trip walk pleasant and scenic.  Wheelchairs and strollers are not permitted in the cave due to narrow passages and occasional small groupings of steps.

See Forever from a Historic Tower

Follow your waterfall adventure up with panoramic views of the Cumberland Plateau and Tennessee River from historic Lookout Mountain Tower.  This scenic overlook is part of Ruby Falls Castle, which was built in 1929 with limestone excavated during construction of the elevator shaft. Watch for blue herons, soaring hawks, and songbirds.

Winter has a way of revealing a different side of places we think we already know—and Ruby Falls is no exception. Located on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this iconic nature park takes on a different personality during the winter quiet season. While summer and school holiday travel bring energy and excitement to the park, January and February offer something rare and exquisite: peace, no crowds, and a more intimate way to see the waterfall while it thunders with breathtaking force from the season’s wet weather.

Lookout Mountain Feels Unhurried

Many would-be visitors can only travel during school holidays. Folks with more flexible schedules serendipitously discover traveling off season feels a lot like you’ve been let in on a secret. With fewer guests visiting Ruby Falls in the winter months, there is a sense of ease and extra breathing room—no rushing, no waiting for a turn to take photos, and conversations are quieter. Nothing pulls your attention away from nature’s wild and unexpected beauty. Instead of checking boxes, you’re soaking things in—and that slower, more intentional rhythm tends to linger long after you’re home.

A Cave That’s Always Comfortable

While winter temperatures drop outside, Ruby Falls Cave remains a comfortable 60 degrees year-round. Spending time in nature, in the middle of winter without needing a coat, feels like a taste of freedom! There is good reason caves successfully sheltered people and animals during centuries of winters.

A man is facing away from the camera as he walks on the cavern trail in Ruby Falls Cave. He is surrounded by limestone.

Peaceful Moments on a Winter Cave Tour

Winter cave tours feel different, quieter, and more immersive. With fewer folks in the cave, a winter visit allows you to slow down– listen for the tranquil sound of water flowing in the cave’s underground babbling streams, discover the soft sound of water droplets gently falling into rim pools, notice the cave’s incredible textures and colors. In the stillness, absorb the natural beauty surrounding you. It’s a peaceful, reflective experience nature lovers appreciate.

Big Nature: When the Waterfall Steals the Show

Winter is when nature shows off in a really big way at Ruby Falls. Consistent winter precipitation (rain, snow, ice) feeds the watershed underground system, often making the famous waterfall especially powerful this time of year. The sight—and sound—of the waterfall thundering is unforgettable. Experiencing peak waterfall flow during the quiet season creates a striking contrast: fewer crowds paired with nature at its most dramatic.

Ruby Falls Waterfall thunders from season rain showers. The limestone around the waterfall is colorfully lit with LED lights.

Cozy Comforts in the Historic Castle

Linger inside the park’s historic castle, built in 1929. Warm your body and soul by the limestone fireplace. Savor a hot drink, casual meal or a local craft beer as the fire crackles nearby, warming hearts and hands alike. It’s a cozy retreat that feels especially inviting during the colder months in Chattanooga. Locals and travelers alike have gathered and made memories at beloved Ruby Falls Castle for 97 years!

The seasonal menu in the castle’s café features winter favorites. The brisket chili is a standout—rich, hearty, and satisfying after exploring the cave and waterfall. It’s the perfect way to end a winter day on Lookout Mountain.

Winter Rewards at Ruby Falls

The winter quiet season at Ruby Falls offers something exceptional. No crowds, a more powerful waterfall, cozy moments by the fire, and a peaceful cave tour all come together, creating an unforgettable opportunity to see the wild side of nature hidden inside Lookout Mountain. If you’re planning a trip to Chattanooga and can travel outside the busy seasons, winter may be the most rewarding time to discover Ruby Falls.

Digging Deeper: Discover the New Geology Tour at Ruby Falls

Ruby Falls has always been a place of wonder — an awe-inspiring underground waterfall tucked deep inside Lookout Mountain. Now, visitors can take their sense of discovery even further with a brand-new Geology Tour designed for curious minds who want to explore not just the beauty of Ruby Falls Cave, but the science behind it.

This specialty tour offers an in-depth look at the forces that shaped Ruby Falls Cave over millions of years. From fossils hidden in the limestone to the intricate water etched stone, and ancient geological formations, every step reveals the powerful geological processes creating this natural wonder.

Ruby Falls guests on a Geology Tour look at formations while their guide explains the natural science of the creation of the formations.

A Tour Rooted in Science

Developed in collaboration with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Geology Department (UTC), the Geology Tour blends scientific insight with the excitement of exploration. Dr. Amy Brock-Hon, Professor of Geology and Associate Department Head at UTC was instrumental in finalizing information presented in the tour to highlight the most fascinating scientific aspects of the cave.

“Lookout Mountain’s biodiversity and the accessibility of Ruby Falls Cave create a rare opportunity to explore geology in a way that’s both engaging and unforgettable,” says Hollie Baranick, Tours & Guest Experience Manager at Ruby Falls.

What to Expect on the Geology Tour

Led by a senior-level Ruby Falls guide, this small-group experience takes participants along the cavern trail to the spectacular underground waterfall. Along the way, guests will:

  • Look closely at fossils embedded in limestone walls.

  • Learn how water dissolves rock over time to form chambers and passageways.

  • Learn how chemical reactions create delicate formations in stunning shapes, sizes, and colors.

  • Spend extra time at the breathtaking underground waterfall, admiring the towering limestone dome carved by water over thousands of years.

For anyone who’s ever wondered how caves are created — or just loves uncovering the mysteries of nature — this tour is the perfect way to dig deeper.

Cavern trail inside Ruby Falls Cave. The trail is surrounded by limestone and geological formations hang from the ceiling about the trail.

Meeting Visitor Curiosity

Ruby Falls created the Geology Tour in response to guest feedback. “Visitors are requesting opportunities to dive deeper into the natural science of the cave,” says Abe McCauley, Director of Operations at Ruby Falls. “This tour gives them the chance to connect closely with both the beauty and the natural science inside Lookout Mountain — and to understand why preserving delicate cave ecosystems is so important.”

Plan Your Visit

Because of its interactive nature, group sizes are limited, so it’s recommended to purchase tickets several days in advance. The Geology Tour is open to guests ages 5 and older.

Whether you’re a lifelong science lover or just curious about what lies beneath the surface, the new Geology Tour at Ruby Falls is a chance to experience one of Tennessee’s most iconic landmarks in a whole new way.

PR and Digital Media Coordinator, Missy M. recommends the Daily Ration on Chattanooga’s NorthShore.  “Daily Ration is always a fun place to bring my dog Riggins; the food is locally sourced, and there are usually one or two other dogs for him to play with.  The large, dog-welcoming, covered patio seating is a gem.”  Open M-F for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and on weekends until 3:00 PM.

Dog in carTour Guide, Ashley M.’s two dogs love walking on the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge. There are plenty of benches on the bridge spanning the Tennessee River, making a perfect spot for a snack or picnic. Pick up a sandwich, salad or dessert to-go from local favorite, River Street Deli on the north side of the bridge at Coolidge Park. Enjoy lunch on a bench high above the Tennessee River.  Be sure to bring along some doggie waste bags, there aren’t any available on the bridge.

Located in a vintage service station, Universal Joint is another great option in downtown Chattanooga for food and drinks. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area. Universal Joint is open for lunch and dinner. It’s a great choice for a late dinner and drinks with your pup in tow.

Best Places for Dog Treats

If you want to reward your dog with a tasty, all-natural Chattanooga treat, toy or a new accessory, head straight to Nooga Paws. The shop is a favorite outing for Ruby Falls Executive Director, Kara Van Brunt’s dog Dooley who fancies their homemade treats. If your pup couldn’t pass up a tempting mud puddle, the self-wash stations at the shop have everything you need to save the day, including an apron to keep you dry.

Chattanooga Dog Parks and Best Places to Take Your Dog for a Scenic Walk

You could plan a Chattanooga getaway based on dog parks and beautiful places to walk your dog! There are fun options around town to fit in between your human adventures.

Tour Guide Gabby’s dogs, Bear and Blue are fans of walking the Sculpture Fields at Montague Park. Besides being the largest sculpture park in the Southeast, the park welcomes leashed pets. The clean-up stations scattered throughout 33-acres of grassy fields make poop pick up a snap. Download the Otocast app to hear featured artists speak about their work while exploring the art park with your dog.  If your dog overheats easily, plan a morning or evening visit and bring along extra water and a bowl.

Chattanooga Dog Parks

About 5 minutes from downtown in Red Bank, White Oak Park is the home of spacious Red Bank Dog Park with separate areas for large and small dogs. Meghan G., Admissions Manager regularly brings her dogs Nelson and Newport to this dog park. “It’s well maintained, and most of the time there are friendly dogs to run and play with, along with restrooms, a picnic gazebo, water supplies, and benches.”

If you’re heading to Chattanooga from the north, take a slight detour off I-75 and stop at Heritage Park.  Tour Guide Kelcie H’s homebody pooch, Zoe is even keen on spending time at Heritage Park’s chill dog park. It features separate sections for large and small dogs, benches, shady areas, water stations and a doggie playground with agility equipment. If you prefer exploring the park with your pup on a leash, you’ll enjoy the meandering walking paths, grassy areas shaded by lots of trees, picnic tables, and restrooms. You’ll both love the creek running through the park.

Other spots to check out are Renaissance Park for a short walk, and Play Wash Pint for drinks, self-wash stations and a super social dog park.

Dogs at Ruby Falls

Doodle at Ruby FallsWhile you’re exploring Ruby Falls Cave, your dog can enjoy outdoor time at the Ruby Falls complimentary kennels. The four shaded, covered, open-air kennels are open seasonally and available first-come-first-serve.

Bring your dog’s bed, food, water, toys or whatever else your pooch would like to stay comfortable. The self-serve kennels are next to the zipline hut. Kennel locks are available at Ruby Falls’ Hospitality Center, along with dog treats. If your dog is an escape artist, place your crate inside the kennel.  Due to health guidelines, only service animals are eligible for consideration to enter the cave with their human parent.

A Quick Hike Before Hitting the Road

Before you climb back in your car, take your leashed pup on a hike along the Hardy Guild Trail which intersects Ruby Falls property at several points. The trail is jam-packed with natural beauty and fascinating history. Bring water for your dog and ask a Ruby Falls team member if you need directions to the trail. Depending on which direction you hike from Ruby Falls, you’ll walk under the Incline Railroad, cross several impressive trestle bridges, or arrive at historic Cravens House, the location of a famous Civil War battle.

Have a great time enjoying the dog-friendly things to do in Chattanooga.  We’ll be waiting to greet you and your pooch at Ruby Falls!

Indulge in the Best of the Best

Indulging in the perfect burger is an essential summer activity (well, let’s be serious – incredible burgers are a must year-round!). If you’re looking for the best burgers in Chattanooga, look no further! The Ruby Falls team compiled a list of their top local burger joints. Whether you prefer the classic burger or something more adventurous, there is a burger out there for everyone in the Scenic City! Ask any Chattanoogan their favorite and you’ll discover fierce loyalty to their favorite.  (Chattanoogan’s LOVE to talk about food!)

Tremont Tavern

Tremont Tavern is an unassuming neighborhood pub boasting tons of accolades and awards. Known for its laid back, welcoming atmosphere, Tremont Tavern takes burgers very, very seriously.

Tremont Tavern burger

The Tremont Burger is a Tavern favorite. With 1⁄2 lb. of proprietary house grind Angus Beef served on a Niedlov’s artisan roll, topped with green-leaf lettuce, sliced tomato, red onion, mayonnaise, mustard & ketchup, it’s a classic that pairs perfectly with a side of tater tots! Tremont Tavern burger fans say the proprietary blend of Angus Beef cannot be beat.

Looking for something with a little twist and the famous beef? Try the Pimento Burger!Topped with house-made pimento cheese, onion straws , house-made pickles, this burger may be your new Southern favorite!

Merv’s

Merv’sis your straight-forward burger joint that never disappoints.  Don’t let their no-frills decor deceive you! If you’re craving a burger, any local will recommend Merv’s as a go-to destination.  Do not miss ordering their homemade fries and onion rings.

Burger and fries

Merv’s burgers and sides are fresh, never frozen, and their menu items are always a great value!  Non-meat eaters will love their grilled cheese or if you’re feeling extra adventurous/nostagic, dig into their Fried Bologna sandwich. Merv’s is a long-time Chattanooga staple for a reason. The come as you are vibe is welcoming for all folks and ages.

Urban Stack

If what you want is a wide burger selection featuring different types of burgers and meats, than Urban Stack is the place to go. Priding itself on its “killer burgers” this semi-upscale bar food restaurant offers an entire menu of burger creations! Choo

se from one of their signature burgers, with options including standard beef burgers,  lamb, chicken, turkey, Wagyu beef and veggie patties.

Try their Fried Green Tomato Burger topped with sharp yellow cheese, remoulade, and Benton’s Bacon. Or possibly you are more leaning towards the Jive Turkey Burger, dressed with tomato-pepper relish, smoked gouda, lettuce, and black-raspberry mayo. Save some room for a handspun milkshake, trust us on this.

Main Street Meats

Our final top contender for the best burger in Chattanooga is found at Main Street Meats on Chattanooga’s southside. Main Street Meats is part neighborhood butcher shop and part restaurant.  Meat is locally sourced by chef/owner Erik Niel. This local beef burger is beloved and served with house-made pickles, caramelized onions, bacon, and Gruyère on a wheat bun.
